The Broncos have continued their late-season surge with a 12-2 upset of the Dragons as Ivan Henjak pulled off a tactical victory over mentor Wayne Bennett.

Scheming pivot Darren Lockyer and boom forward Dave Taylor were the stars as Brisbane restricted the competition leaders to a first-half penalty goal and racked up its third successive win.

Lockyer’s note-perfect kicking game in the second period allowed the visitors to build pressure, and the rewards came via a try to Antonio Winterstein that extended a 6-2 half-time lead. Read more here…

St George Illawarra brushed aside the absence of seven first team regulars to thump premiers Manly 48-18 at WIN Stadium and continue their charge toward the NRL minor premiership.The Dragons re-affirmed their grip on top spot with an eight tries to three demolition.

Manly’s loss of four players to Origin commitments plus Jamie Lyon and Brett Stewart to injury was not helped by an afternoon of handling errors. St George Illawarra centre Matt Cooper put up his hand for a NSW Origin recall with a superb individual display to lift the Dragons back to the top of the NRL table with a 32-18 win over North Queensland at WIN Stadium.

St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett lauded his injury-hit squad’s toughness but it was Warriors counterpart Ivan Cleary who looked most in need of medical treatment after the Dragons’ thrilling 12-11 NRL win in Wollongong on Sunday.

St George Illawarra Dragons 16 def Gold Coast Titans 10

IN hot conditions at Wollongong the Dragons and Titans played out a high-paced, physical but not particularly skilful game.

After 80 minutes it was St George Illawarra who took the two points because they made the least mistakes. The Titans didn’t do too much wrong but their errors were conceded in bad areas of the field and were compounded with other errors. They also had little sting in attack, only Scott Prince looked dangerous.

And that was about it – neither side looked fantastic with the ball, defence was in the ascendancy and the home fans went home happy… ish. Read more…
